On August 19, 2016, our Humane Law Enforcement Officer received a complaint alleging the malicious injury of an 11-week old Boxer, named “Tyson”.

After a lengthy investigation, it was determined that “Tyson” sustained a severe fracture to his left forelimb, as well as signs of head trauma resulting in inappropriate mental status. The investigation lead to the arrest of an Eduardo Garcia from Coventry, RI, who was charged with one felony count of Malicious Injury to an Animal.

On 06/20/17, Garcia entered a plea of no contest (an admission of guilt) and was given a 3yr sentence consisting of 18 months of home confinement, 18 months suspended with probation. He was also ordered to pay the victim dog’s owner $4,971.38 in restitution and ordered not to possess or reside in a place with any animal for 3 years.

This sentence constitutes a conviction under Rhode Island Law and we would like to commend Associate Justice Joseph A. Montalbano for handing down a fair and appropriate sentence and for speaking for those who cannot speak for themselves.
