National Dogs in Politics Day!

“Dogs in Politics Day” is celebrated annually on September 23. It is also known as “National Checker’s Day” after President Nixon’s dog named Checkers, a black and white cocker spaniel. President Nixon spoke to over 60 million viewers via television on September 23, 1952 to refute charges that he had abused campagne contributions. By calling attention to his dog Checkers who was given to him while being president, he was able to gain the public’s trust and make the charges against him seem absurb. He was able to stay on the ticket as Vice President and his fameous speech was dubbed the “Checkers Speech”.
