On April 11, 2019, Michael Williams, formerly of 189 Pleasant View Ave, in Smithfield, pleaded guilty to the unlawful/unlicensed practice of veterinary medicine and conspiracy to unlawfully practice veterinary medicine. These charges were the result of an animal cruelty investigation conducted by the Rhode Island SPCA in March of 2018.
Williams received a six year sentence at the ACI, with one year to serve, for both charges. Along with this sentence, there were several special conditions imposed, including the prohibition of owning, possessing, caring for animals, as well as the commercial sale or breeding of animals, either directly or indirectly, during this six year period.
The Rhode Island SPCA would like thank the Smithfield Police Department and Division of Animal Control, for their assistance with the investigation. We would also like to thank the Office of the Attorney General for their diligence and efforts put forth in prosecuting this case. Furthermore, we feel this sentence sets a precedent that crimes against animals will not be tolerated in this State, and we hope this acts as a deterrent for any future offenders.
